Malawi Implements Strict Gambling Regulations to Safeguard Minors

The Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA) has taken significant steps to protect vulnerable populations by implementing stringent new regulations, which include a ban on anyone under the age of 18 from participating in gambling activities. This announcement was made by MAGLA Director General Racheal Mijiga during a key regulations sensitization workshop held in Mangochi. The workshop gathered operators, industry experts, and representatives from the media, creating a platform for discussing the importance of the new regulations.

During the workshop, Mijiga underscored MAGLA’s commitment to safeguarding minors from the harmful effects of gambling. She highlighted the importance of restricting access to gambling premises for children and reiterated this point on the official MAGLA Facebook account, stating, “Children under the age of 18 are not allowed. This is a stand against exposing and allowing children into gambling premises.” Mijiga also warned that individuals who violate this age restriction would face significant penalties, including fines that could amount to K20 million (approximately $11,530 USD).

In addition to the age restrictions, the revised regulations encourage operators to initiate awareness campaigns aimed at educating the public, particularly youth, about the potential risks associated with gambling. The new framework encompasses various areas, including sports betting, national lotteries, player protection, internet gaming, and advertisement regulations. Central to these reforms is the implementation of an electronic monitoring system that requires all operators to integrate their operations. This system aims to promote compliance and enhance transparency throughout the entire gambling sector, ultimately fostering a safer environment for all. Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA)
