Communications Authority warns Media Over gambling.

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has warned media houses from gambling, citing a surge in public complaints regarding the proliferation of betting, lottery, and gambling content.

Gambling has found itself at the heart of the media industry. Several radio and TV stations now incorporate betting elements into their programs. Many vernacular stations promote games” where they encourage listeners to deposit small amounts – often as little as Sh30 or Sh50 – with the chance to win larger sums.

The CA emphasized the importance of adhering to the FM Radio and TV license Programme Code and Complaints Handling Procedure, as well as regulations concerning the protection of children, advertisements, betting, lottery, and gambling.

The CA is reminding broadcasters of their obligations under the  Kenya Information and Communications Act, 1998, specifically sections 461(1)(a), (c), and (i). These sections mandate that licensees provide responsible programming for diverse audiences, adhere to standards of good taste and decency, and ensure truthful advertising.

In a letter dated April 23rd, 2025, the CA has directed all broadcasters to rectify these violations within 14 days from the letter’s date. Failure to comply will result in enforcement action, including potential license revocation, as per Sections 83A (1), 46J(a), and (b) of the Kenya Information and Communications Act, 1998.
