What’s the True Value of Regulated Gambling in Kenya?

Author: Roberto Bagio

There’s a lot of talk about gambling in Kenya, and it sounds like it’s all bad news. We hear about people losing money and getting addicted. The stories of losses are real. Those affected should get the necessary support systems. But what if the current discourse overlooks the true value of a well-regulated gambling industry to our economy and Society? Who needs to take the blame for holding vital information to the public?

The betting firms spend far too little on educating the public about both sides of gambling–the wins, and the risks. Above all, if there’s ever a gospel that needs to be spread, it’s this: “ Gambling is solely for fun and entertainment. It should never be  a source of income or a solution to financial problems.”  We must promote recreational gambling and not gambling driven by economic desperation.

The betting industry, if managed well,  can bring some good. Look for example.  Just in eight months up to February 2025, KRA had collected a whooping 12.47 billion in taxes from betting firms. These funds can be channeled into vital public services such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure development.

Again, if  Kenya truly aims to develop its sports sector, the betting industry must be a key partner and source of funding. Fortunately, The Sports, Arts, and Social Development Fund already exists, funded by proceeds from betting and lotteries. This money can build modern stadiums, sponsor local teams at various levels, invest in professional coaching and training academies, and create a sustainable and thriving sports ecosystem.

Furthermore, the gambling sector is a big employer. From the staff in casinos and betting shops to the technology developers and marketing teams behind online platforms. These jobs contribute to livelihoods and inject spending power into our economy.

Beyond direct employment, the casinos and resorts attract both domestic and international visitors, leading to increased spending in hotels, restaurants, entertainment venues, and local businesses.

As for gaming enthusiasts, only the BCLB can save us. The key here is regulation: A  regulatory framework that controls the industry, maximizing its benefits and mitigating risks. This includes:

  • Strict licensing procedures, ensuring only reputable and financially stable operators are allowed to function.
  • Effective taxation systems
  • Implementation of responsible gambling measures mandating self-exclusion programs, deposit limits, age verification, and public awareness campaigns.
  • Ensuring compliance with regulations and penalizing illegal operations.
  • Providing access to resources and treatment for those struggling with addiction.

Instead of condemnation, perhaps the conversation should shift towards optimizing regulation, promoting responsible gambling practices, and ensuring that the revenue generated is used for the benefit of all Kenyans. The true value of regulated gambling lies in its potential to contribute to a thriving and prosperous nation, provided it is managed with diligence, transparency, and a genuine commitment to protecting its citizens.
